The life and times of a Gremlin

Saturday, as Danny and I were organizing the garage, the kids were alternating between riding the bikes up and down the sidewalk, playing at the playground, and drawing on the driveway with sidewalk chalk.

The babies were napping.

It was a good set up.

We were getting a lot done.

I had been inside maybe two minutes when Danny opened the door from the garage and said to a little person,

"Go ask Mommy to wash your hands."

Hammy came inside to me with arms completely black up to the elbows and a big smile on his face.

"Hammy, what happened?"  I asked.

"I put da lellow chalk in da van," he said, so proud of himself.

Hammy loves yellow.  It's his favorite color.

Hmm.  That's interesting since he can't open the van doors by himself, I thought as I scrubbed him down with Dawn dish soap.

"Okay, dry off and go play nicely," I said.

"Danny, how did Hammy's arms get like that?"

"He was playing with the tail pipe of the van," Danny responded.

"He said he put the yellow chalk in the van.  Did he stick his arm up the tail pipe?"

Danny went to check out the tail pipe.  He couldn't see past the bend in the pipe to see if the chalk was still there.  But he also couldn't locate the yellow chalk.  There was a yellow scribble inside the tail pipe up to the bend.

After consulting with my parents, we concluded that it would probably come out of the van when the van is started.

Not long later, maybe an hour, our happy little Hammy came up the driveway huffing and puffing carrying something concrete.

"Look Mommy!  I find a circle!"  He puffed out.

Hammy loves circles.  It's his favorite shape.

I looked.  It was a concrete circle about 9 inches in diameter and nearly 3 inches thick that said SEWER on it.

I know he's not trying to get into mischief.  I know he's just a curious and smart little guy learning about his world.

And I reminded myself of this while I searched half the block, the area to and around the playground, and the street for where to put the circle back.

I couldn't find it.

Oh my little Gremlin, what will you do next?

The Proper Care and Feeding of your Gremlin #4

My gremlin learned the art of drinking your milk after the cereal is gone.  Yes, that's sugar cereal stuck to his forehead.
Lesson #4
If you want to present a clean house to your parents and in-laws, NEVER tell your Gremlin that Grandmas and Grandpas are coming.  NEVER  He will refuse napping.  You may even end up considering Benadryling your Gremlin in your crazed state.

AND in your frantic rushed state, NEVER on said day feed your Gremlin Ramen Noodles "because they're fast."  It is NOT a quick clean up when a Gremlin is involved.  Ramen Noodles do not wipe up.  They smeeeeeear.

Bonus Lesson
NEVER teach your Gremlin how to open the fridge thinking it will help him be more independent and take some work off your shoulders.  You should see what a Gremlin can do with an illegally obtained Capri-Sun.

The Proper Care and Feeding of your Gremlin #2 and #3

Our gremlin is now 2 1/2 years old.  Oftentimes Hammy the gremlin refuses medication.  The gremlin does, however, enjoy his chewable vitamins.  But mostly, the gremlin runs when he sees the syringe.  (Maybe it's just that mommy wants him to do something and he wants to play devil's advocate.)

I prefer it when my gremlin looks like this.  Cute, loveable, big eyes.

Today I made homemade disposable baby wipes.  One-half a roll of paper towels 1 1/4 cups of water, 1/2 tbsp. baby oil, 1/2 tbsp. baby shampoo, and a couple drops of tea tree oil.  Tea tree oil is extremely strong smelling.  I wish the bottle had a little dropper to go with it.  I usually pour way too much into the wipe solution.  So, lately I've used a syringe to syphon out just a wee little bit of it.

I didn't take care of the syringe right away.  I decided to change a few diapers, check Pookie's homework, eat some chocolate, make a couple phone calls, wipe the dining table so Gabbers could finish her homework, and then I was going to do dishes.  That includes the syringe and everything else lying around the kitchen.

My gremlin does not agree with tea tree oil.  Drooling and spitting he came running to find me while I was scrubbing dining chairs, "Mommy, HOT!  Yucky.  Burning.  HOT!"  *spit*

Lesson #2  Never feed your gremlin tea tree oil.

Lesson # 3  If you have a gremlin, have Poison Control in the phone memory.

The Proper Care and Feeding of your Gremlin

I have a 22 1/2-month old Gremlin. Sometimes he is cute and smiley and quite cuddly. Other times I am reminded that he is almost two.

Yesterday, before heading over to Danny's parents house to visit, I thought it would be very time-efficient to shower with my Gremlin. He needed a shower and so did I. After much ear-piercing shrieking that little Gremlin pooped on my foot.

Lesson #1
Never shower with your Gremlin.
