The Triplets Story part 3: ER people and their questions

I told a couple people that I was leaving church to go over to the ER to have my pain checked out.

I didn't want to tell anyone because I didn't want them to worry about me.  Danny and I decided it would be better for just him and Ham to take me to the ER and he'd be back for the three older kids. That's why we had to tell someone- so they wouldn't think we abandoned our 7, 5, and 3 year old at church.

Danny and Hammy dropped me off at the ER and headed back to church. I told him I'd call him when I was done. (ER visits seemed to be at least three hours on average for us.)

I was slightly nervous. Last time I went to the ER during pregnancy they told me I was miscarrying and that they couldn't even see a baby (during the ultrasound).

I checked in with the triage desk at the ER. Then I sat in the lobby waiting my turn. Then the nurse called me back.

The nurse took my vitals, asked why I was there, asked what number pregnancy this was and how many live births, commented I was going to be busy with five kids, told me her life story (because that's what people do- and it was very interesting by the way), asked me to describe my pain and then rate it on a scale of 1-10.

My pain felt like it was a 6.5 to 7. She wrote 7.

Then the nurse sent me back to the lobby.

Forty minutes later I came back to the desk and asked if there was a bed I could rest on because I was crampy and uncomfortable. That's when the nurse said, "Yes we actually just got one ready. Come this way."

She took me to the room and handed me a gown and said she'd return with a warm blanket. When she returned to my room with the warm blanket she told me to change into the gown and that the doctor would be in soon.

While I was changing a nurse knocked and opened the door within a split-second of the knock. I covered myself as best as I could with gown and she apologized for not waiting longer after the knock. I was embarrassed and rushed to finish changing.

I called my friend Trish on the phone right after changing.

The doctor entered the room without a knock and I quickly closed my gown over my rear-end (which luckily fit). I tried to modestly climb onto the bed and cover myself with the blanket.

The doctor asked me the same questions: why was I there, what number pregnancy, how many live births, and my pain level.

He said, "Wow, I only have three kids and that's plenty of work."

And of course you know what my reply was.

The ER doctor told me he'd get some Zofran for the nausea and something stronger than Tylenol for the pain- but assured me it would be safe for the baby.

I declined the Zofran. I told him I only experienced nausea when my pain was really bad- but the nausea wasn't bad at all. The doctor said he'd have someone get an IV started for me and also an ultrasound was on the way. to be continued . . .

Why an IV? They sure seemed quick to offer you alot of meds. All for just pain? INot to minimize your pain AT ALL, but just going off what the medical team knew so far, they sure seemed quick to give you anything and everything before checking on the baby(ies).

Nikki - you are killing me - I'm so impatient, and this is taking forever, LOL! You must have your hands full with 4 kids or something to drag it out like this. :-)

Why isn't this the end of the story yet? Triplets should equal a 3 part story:-)

Yes? Yes? And then? Come on Nikki! Finish the gosh darn story for cryin' out loud! I'm on the edge of my seat here, girl! I am still in total shock that you're having TRIPLETS!!! Seriously, I think I pooped my pants when I read about it on Erin's blog. I honestly feel for you with the "what the heck am I going to do with triplets" thing. I don't want to even pretend that my having twins and a 2 year old can compare at all with your having triplets and four kids under 7, but I DO know that there is a lot to take in, and a lot to prepare for, and a whole new game plan to come up with when you're thinking about having multiples. Being a mom of SEVEN instead of FIVE (which is still a lot, by the way...what were you THINKING?!) is a big deal. Lots of extra car seats, cribs & high chairs to make room for. Not to mention, you'll probably need a bigger vehicle. (What kind of SUV fits seven kids under seven anyway? I'm sure these are all things you're busy figuring out by now.) I can imagine the thrill and excitement of taking on this unforeseen adventure, as well as the overwhelming STRESS and feelings of inadequacy you must be having. (Not that you're at all inadequate...I'm just not sure anyone could ever feel truly ready to take on triplets!) I hope you do have lots of friends close by you can rely on. I hope you have lots of grandmas living next door and visiting teachers who have nothing else to do but take your kids to the park for a few hours a day so you can rest. Pregnancy with triplets has got to be a real you-know-what in the you-know-where. Oh Nikki! I FEEL FOR YOU!!! And I'm excited, of course. Just remember, it really will be SO FUN... after about the first year or so when the babies are old enough to interact and keep each other entertained. Whoa nellie! What an adventure you have ahead of you!!! You're not going to do cloth diapers with all of them are you?

I'm anxious to hear why you were having so much pain. I'm guessing it is typical of multiple pregnancies (?)

Now, everytime I have cramps I'll be SURE I'm pregnant with triplets!

You're so great!! God will never give you more than you can handle. So he knows that you are EXTRA, EXTRA, EXTRA special. You're a wonderful mommy and if it is anyone who can do this, it is you. I'm excited for you. What a crazy adventure!!
PS Thanks for strawberry shake and chili fries. It was a delish combo of flavor. Our whole family gubbed down.

Waiting, waiting, waiting is not what I like to do.

Please tell me more about what happened to you.

Can't wait to hear the rest of the story. We have three sets of triplets in our neighborhood, age two, high school, and adult. It's quite the undertaking. Your blog will be famous. Congratulations. I wish I could be there to help. I'm right now in California with our newest grandson.
