Pluto kiddie kwip

Pookie: Mommy, in my class they say that Pluto is a planet.

Me: Oh? Well did you tell them.

Pookie: No.

Me: You do know what it is right?

Pookie: a dwarf planet. I didn't tell them because I don't want it to be a dwarf planet.

That is AWESOME!! I can remember when it was just a plain old planet. WHY do they have to go and confuse me?? I love that Pookie is soooo smart!!

I know, I know, it has been a serious discussion at our house as well. We first taught Will the whole rhyme about remembering the planets, and of course Pluto was one of them, so when we read about the demote, Will was totally bummed. He also refuses to acceot it and insists it's still a planet. Go Pookie!!
Also, I tagged you on my blog, so if you are interested, check it out.
Love ya!

Well, you and Pookie might be interested in knowing that many professional astronomers also refuse to accept Pluto's demotion. About 300, led by Dr. Alan Stern, Principal Investigator of NASA's New Horizons mission to Pluto and one of the leading scholars on Pluto in the world, signed a petition stating they will not use the new definition, which they described accurately as "sloppy." The real problem is that the new definition states that dwarf planets are not planets at all. This makes absolutely no linguistic sense, and I believe it will eventually be reversed, so that dwarf planets become just one subclass of planets, as are gas giants, for example. You can read more about the worldwide resistance to the IAU decision on my blog at http://laurele.livejournal.com
Go Pookie!
