Can we add a class?

Yesterday I registered Pookie for first grade in public school. It was a hard decision we had been mulling over since the beginning of last year. This year, it felt like the right choice.

After talking with the principal and secretary and filling out forms, I was excited to prepare him for school. I babbled on about a new handwriting he'd learn (D'nealian), math, science, art, learning to write sentences correctly, reading, music, P.E., recess, lunch together, and on and on. Then on the way to Wal-Mart to pick up his school supplies I said to him,

"Do you have any questions? Is there anything you want to know about school?"

He said, "Um... Mommy, can they teach me how to be a firefighter?"

Pookie will have a great time in first grade. I know it's a hard decision to make especially since you have been teaching him at home. Will started first grade and he loves it so far. He has a great teacher and he loves learning!!! So, have a great first grade year Pookie!!

He will probably love the independence and feel so grown up leaving the babies at home! We actually have a firefighter program available to our High Schoolers. Mine didn't have the desire. I'd love to see Pookie on the day a fireman visits his classroom to talk about fire safety!

Hahah! Too cute. Now see, there's something you won't find in any public schoool...vocational training at age 6. :)

Isn't it funny, that we, as mothers, are so worried about the little details about sending our kids to school and yet the kids are just concerned about things that aren't even connected with them. Pookie, you're going to have a great year!

Are you going to cry? You hear about a lot of Moms that cry when they drop their first one off at school for the first time. I cried when I dropped Trouble off for his first primary activity. Plus I'd like to think that I was emotional because of the pregnancy :-)

Good luck with that. I didn't cry with the first one. I cried when I took DD to school for the first time. Tomorrow I put my baby on the bus for the first time, I have no idea if I'll party or bawl. We'll see. You never know how you are going to handle it until it is right there in your face.

Kids are so funny. Who cares about reading, writing, or math. When do they teach the firefighting skills?

A friend told me when her son started Kindergarten, he told the teacher he only knew how to make an E for his name, and that's all he was going to write and she'd just know it was him. He wasn't interested in learning anymore of his name, he was just coming to learn math!
