WFMW-- Reusable Nursing Pads

I've been racking my brain to share a Works for Me Wednesday tip with you. I'm sure there are tons of things I do on a regular basis that I just assume others do too. This may be one of them, but I'm sharing it anyway.

To make your own pair of reusable nursing pads you will need:

approximately two 5"x20" pieces of flannel
scissors
sewing machine or serger
matching thread

I use a CD as my circle pattern. I place it on the fabric, outline it and cut it out. Each nursing pad takes four circles (approximately 5 inch diameter each) stacked together and sewn all around the edge. A serger makes it way faster and without fraying edges. Or you could zig-zag all around.

What really works for me is using old receiving blankets that are nice and soft from multiple washings. You could use old flannel shirts or sheets too. Stains or wild prints don't matter since only the nursing baby will see them. :) So check out your yard sales and thrift stores for some flannel and make your own! I'd recommend sewing a few pairs so you don't run out while they're washing. And to wash: just toss them in with your regular wash or towels and then into the dryer.

Speaking of dryers, for more WFMW tips visit Rocks in my Dryer.

Thank you, I just was at walmart and almost bought some (baby is due in three weeks) but I'm glad I didn't. I have some white flannel that would work great. So these end up 5 inches in diameter finished? That seems kind of big to me...I guess I need to try it.

Great idea! I had never thought of making my own.

They actually end up a little smaller. Maybe more like 4 1/2 to 4 3/4 inches. You could try making them that size and see if they're too big. And then just make them smaller.

I've had some before that were smaller and didn't like them as much. But I'm sure size and different styles of nursing bras affect how well they fit.

Congrats on a new baby (soon)!

Do you ever have a problem with them sticking out? I would love to make some instead of using the disposable ones. They do stick out a little in a small point (over the nipple). They are flat but my breasts are not. They are rounded so there is too much material and that makes the middle poke out some. Kind of noticable and I am trying to find a way to not look cold all time as it is!! LOL Is there a way to make them slightly cup shaped?

I haven't noticed them sticking out. I suppose you could sew them with a dart to angle it a little. Or you could try different diameters-- larger or smaller circles to see if different sizes work better with your shape. Good luck! I'll let you know if I come across any suggestions.

This is a good idea... my husband's grandmother found a huge bag of reusable ones at a garage sale for me when I was pregnant with my first and they still work great. She wouldn't even let me pay her back -- a great deal on my part!

My five children are all grown and gone from home now, but they were breast feed. And your post sure brought back memories. LOL
Blessings

To make them cup shaped, you might be able to set your tension a little tighter. It should be tight enough that the fabric will ripple a little but not tuck over onto itself...
