WFMW-- the Mommy Store/a disciplining lifesaver!

Today's WFMW is our life-saving discovery and discipline help-- the Mommy-Store! I was going to add a photo of the Mommy-Store, but my digital camera is on the fritz. So, I'll add it as soon as possible. I've written about the Mommy-Store before in this post. And the how-to's on Mommy-Money in this post. The only things that have changed are available goods, it's now open on Wednesdays, and Bun wants in on this very, very good thing! If you have further questions, please feel free to comment or email me. Thanks for reading!

note: I thought this would eventually get old with the kids. But it doesn't. I just need to post little notes around the house reminding me of the Mommy-Store. When I think about it, I notice the good more in the children rather than the irritating things. I look for opportunities to award white chips.

ADDED NOTE: In response to a few more questions . . .

Poker chips are what we use for Mommy-Money. We bought them in the game section at Wal-Mart. Having never gambled or played poker before, I didn't know where to find them or what they would look like. So I asked an associate. They're very inexpensive.

Right now, we've simplified prices according to shelf. The top shelf items cost 1 Mommy-Money (Mr. Potato Head noses, ears, and eyes, stickers, or one Hershey Kiss), the middle shelf items cost 3 Mommy-Money (Pez refills, seasonal pencils, coupons, a stick of gum), the bottom shelf items cost 5 Mommy-Money (books, doctor kit items).

There is a glass canning jar for each child with their name on it. Then there's a bigger glass jar with all the Mommy-Money in it. When they get awarded, I hand them their jar and their chip so they can put it in.

Wow, I love this idea. I've been wracking my brain trying to think of things to do to get the kids into some sort of bartering system, in relation to payment for good behavior and chores and all of those things. I think this is great.

How do you have the kids keep track of their chips though?

MommaBlogger-

We have glass jars with their names labeled on them. They are up high so they can't play with them or remove the red chips. We show them the jars whenever they ask or want to count the chips. This helps them realize they need to be more obedient if they want a lot more white chips than red chips.

Thanks for your question!

This is a fabulous idea! I especially love the coupon idea along with the toy store. I would've never came up with this on my own. I'm glad I followed your link from Rocks in My Dryer!

This is such a great idea. I've been contemplating doing this since you first told me about it. I'm just waiting to finish reading that book, The Parenting Breakthough, to implement a few new systems into place at the same time. Anyway, my question is where did you get your chips? and can you give us some examples of how much some things are?

Hmm, this wouldn't work for my teens, I have 3 different age sets, but I bet I could make it work for computer and tv time in relation to doing chores! yessirree!!! I'm on to something, thanks a bunch!

I love this idea! I, too, have been trying to find a way to get the kids in order, and this may do the trick! Thanks so much.

What a neat idea! I'm thinking this could be a good way for my kids to earn back the toys that get put in time out. Thanks for sharing!

This is an excellent idea! Thanks! I will be doing this with my 3 year old. Sometimes it takes hours to get him to pick up his room.

Hi, I have another question. Do you have a list of how you dispense the chips? I keep trying to write things down, but I have a tendency never to get past that point because I try to think of EVERYTHING at once. If you wouldn't mind giving me a list I would appreciate it. My email is shanawoodman(at)hotmail(dot)com
