Ode to the Frozen North Tomato

Tonight may be the death of my tomatoes. We have a frost advisory in effect this evening from 7 p.m. until 7 a.m. tomorrow morning. The temperature is expected to drop to low to mid 30’s. The half dozen we harvested this season were wonderful.

Ode to the Frozen North tomato: (sing to the tune of Turkey in the Straw)

In Montana or in Utah this tomato plant would thrive,
But here in Frozen North land it just tries to stay alive.
The procrastinating planter then the squirrels and dakrats,
Then the puppy and the kitty and the neighbor’s wanderin’ cats.

Chorus:
You were doomed, before you bloomed
Poor tomato I’ll miss you.
Nice and red, but soon you will be dead,
That’s the life in our land, and I’ll no longer be fed.

So I’ll take some clear lawn trash bags and I’ll try to save you all,
But it’s a vain attempt since this place hardly has a Fall.
We just think the season Autumn doesn’t need to happen here
But next year when I plant I’ll keep my plants inside and near.

Chorus:
You were doomed, before you bloomed
Poor tomato I’ll miss you.
Nice and red, but soon you will be dead,
That’s the life in our land, and I’ll no longer be fed.

If you have any life-saving tomato advice, please leave a comment now or email me.

This week it was in the 90s still for us. Not that I'm gloating. I'm anxiously awaiting that cool crisp autumn air.

When do you find the time to post so much. I love forward to reading the updates for the family. I feel like we're just neighbors instead of leagues away.

Well, not much advice, but maybe you can make a cover for them (they sell them too I believe) that makes a mini green house over the plants to preserve what little heat they receive.
Hmm.. other than that, all I know is that everyone around here had no luck with tomatoes this year. Bad crops.

When frosts hit, you can pull up the tomato plants and hang them upside down (in garage?) and the green tomatoes will continue to ripen! Ever tried fried green tomatoes?
